Western Federation of Watercolor Societies

An annual exhibition of water media paintings hosted on a rotating basis by 12 member societies from the western states. Entries are handled by Delegates from each Society.

Leadership training is one of the hallmarks of our organization. We share knowledge of what works (and what does not) within the various organizations.

Communities benefit by hosting this excellent rotating exhibition. The hosts receive seed money from alliance dues to help sponsor the exhibition.

Members of the societies  below are automatically members of WFWS. If your group wants information about joining WFWS, please Contact Us.

Our Story

The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies encourages and recognizes artistic excellence and encourages the visibility of watercolor as an artistic medium through annual exhibitions. WFWS was founded in 1974 by the New Mexico Watercolor Society through the foresight and work of Dr. David Gale (1915-1980). Today WFWS includes over 5000 artists in ten regional societies.

The federation sponsors an annual juried exhibition which is hosted each year by a different regional member society. Exhibitions showcase works on paper created with a variety of water-based media, including collage, casein, gouache, tempera, acrylic and transparent or opaque watercolors. A diversity of artistic expression is the result. Membership in WFWS is automatic for any artist who is a member of any of the twelve different regional societies
